Newark is one of four cities selected as an MBK Model Community for its success in the sixth milestone within the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, an Obama Foundation initiative, Key Life Milestones framework. Newark is being acknowledged for the public safety work it has done to ensure young people “remain safe from violent crime.” The other cities recognized for their milestone achievement are Yonkers, New York; Omaha, Nebraska; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The central purpose of a Model Community is not only to be celebrated for the work that has already been done but also to expand the implementation of evidence-based practices and impact across all of the MBK Milestones. Over the next five years, Newark will be supported in working to demonstrate progress in the other five MBK Milestones for Success.

My Brother's Keeper Newark will assist in the community work that ensures these milestones will be achieved, in support of the future success of our youth.

KEY LIFE MILESTONES

Entering school ready to learn is an important first step in youth’s path to success both academically and beyond.

Reading at grade level by the third grade is a key indicator of success later in life and may lead to challenges academically if not met.

Graduating from high school is an essential milestone that lays the foundation for college and career readiness.

Completing postsecondary education or training brings youth steps closer to qualifying for the jobs and careers they desire.

Reaching successful employment allows for youth to not only achieve their goals but also support their families and communities - an achievement worth striving torward.

Remaining safe from violent crime is an achievement all youth should have. And those that have already experienced the criminal justice system should receive the education, training and treatment needed to receive a second chance.
