Mission Statement

"MBK Newark’s mission is to address persistent
opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color
and ensure that all young people can reach their full potential, regardless of who they are, where they come from or the circumstances in which they are born."
 
MBK Newark leads initiatives to ensure boys and young men of color around the President Obama's My Brother's Keeper Milestone:
  1. Enter school ready to learn
  2. Reading at Grade Level by 3rd grade
  3. Graduate from high school ready for college and career
  4. Complete post-secondary education and training
  5. Successfully enter the workforce
  6. Reduce violence and provide a second chance

MBK Newark Priorities

THE SCOPE OF MY BROTHER'S KEEPER NEWARK CURRENTLY FOCUSES ON THREE OF THE SIX MBK MILESTONE AREAS. THE FOLLOWING CORE STRATEGIES ARE WAYS INDIVIDUALS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE COMMUNITY CAN SUPPORT THE MBK NEWARK MISSION AND WORK TOWARD IMPROVING LIFE OUTCOMES FOR YOUNG MEN OF COLOR

Milestone 3

Graduating from High School Ready for College and Career

POPULATION LEVEL GOAL FOR 2020:

A 10% reduction in the number of young men of color who drop out of high school

Core Strategies:

•Raise awareness about the need to support schools in addressing the whole student, including the range of issues that YMOC are facing

•Build partnerships to help equip schools and out of school time networks to deal with the social emotional challenges that impede academic success

•Support and help develop authentic plat-forms for parent engagement

Milestone 4

Completing Post-Secondary Education or Training

POPULATION LEVEL GOAL FOR 2020:

A 5% increase in the number of young men of color who attain a post secondary degree or professional certificate

Core Strategies:

•Raise awareness for the need of adequate student preparation

•Build partnerships that focus on strategies that bridge the skills gap

•Support and develop pathways to success

Milestone 6

Reducing Violence and Providing a Second Chance

POPULATION LEVEL GOAL FOR 2020:

A 25% reduction in the number of young men of color who are introduced to the criminal justice system

Core Strategies:

•Raise awareness regarding sentencing reform, including alternatives to arrest and detention

•Build partnerships that focus on reentry supports for formerly incarcerated

•Support and develop trauma-informed care initiatives
